The Libya situation
9 February 2020
I just finished the meeting with the Libya Government in Tripoli on the serious political situation there. The Libya situation is very, very bad. The UN supports the Government in Tripoli but attempts to secure peace has made very little progress. This is also a regional geopolitical matter and yet another oil rich country caught by the so called “resource curse”.
YB Nik Nazmi, William Leong and myself, discussed the situation with HE Khaled Elmeshri, the President of the High Council of State of the Libya Government. I informed Mr. Khaled that my International Relations and Trade Select Committee will hold a special hearing on the matter sometime in mid to late March. I will ask my officers to meet with the Libyan Ambassador, HE Dr. Nagat Elforgani in the next few days, to work out the logistics to conduct such a hearing.
